Title

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice regarding consumption of Carbonated Beverages among young adults (18 to 25 years)

Abstract

Abstract Background: The consumption patterns of carbonated beverages among young adults have gathered increasing attention due to the potential health implications associated with their intake. Aim: To determine the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice regarding carbonated beverages among young adults aged 18-25 years. Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted on 200 participants where 100 of participants were male and 100 female using purposive sampling. Participants were asked to fill out a structured questionnaire which included knowledge, attitude, and practice questions along with demographic, and health related questionnaires. Participants belonged to the 18-25 years age range. Data were analyzed statistically and a p-value of less than 0.05 and 0.001 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study found significant associations between education and awareness of ingredients (p=0.000). Similarly, significant associations between education and knowledge of caloric value (p=0.002) was found. In this study there was also a significant positive correlation between socioeconomic status and awareness of ingredients and caloric value of carbonated beverages (p=0.000). Also there is an association between gender and willingness to quit carbonated beverages (p=0.000). On comparison between genders and frequency of consumption of carbonated beverages a significant relationship (p=0.000) was found. According to the findings of this study, the consumption of carbonated beverages was more frequent and on a regular basis in males as compared to females. Conclusion: Almost every participant consumed carbonated beverages but most of the participants were not aware of the components and caloric value of these drinks. This study concludes that females had a greater level of nutritional knowledge and they showed correct nutritional attitudes regarding consumption of carbonated beverages in comparison with males.
