Title

Dance of Adivasi People: Identity Through Practice and Performance of Art and Ideas

Authors

Abstract

Dance and culture are interconnected. Dancing ‘body’ can become a language to communicate with audience. Today, like Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi or other traditional dance forms, folk dance is also becoming popular. Hasimara, a small village in dooars is the witness of tribal dance forms. Adivasi people perform and carry the very root of Hinduism. Their dance illuminates their backward life and enlightens every festival they celebrate. Adivasi people still respect the bond between human civilization and nature. In this modern era, they are categorized as the weaker part of society and deprived of basic necessities. Their social economic status does not allow the word ‘equality’ for their life. But on the other, the indigenous culture which is still performed adds glory in Indian cultural forms. Is their culture truly the carrier of Hinduism? Is their dancing style a source of communication? How does the simple dancing style carry their ideology? Do they dance only for celebration? These questions move the spectators while watching them to perform the act of rituals or the form of dance. This paper is about how the cope with the idea of dancing in social and cultural forms. Their performance represents their distinctive nature of living even in this era of comparison and competition. Their ‘will power’ exhilarates to carry their cultural identity firmly.
