Travancore is rich in historical memories, but there are a few that command the affectionate respect of the Travancore people. On such aspect of great historical importance is the role played by General De-Lannoy who gave himself so unsparingly to the service of Travancore, then ruled by Martanda Varma Maharajah who took him captive at the battle of Colachel. De-Lannoy fought for the security and honour of Travancore with great zeal, fidelity, and daring. This foreign-trained commander of the Travancore army served Maharajah Martanda Varma for seventeen years and served his successor Maharajah Rama Varma for nineteen years.
