Title

Effectiveness of Theater-Based Teaching on the Development of Sympathy among IX Standard Students learning Kannada Language in Chitradurga District

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of theater-based teaching on the development of sympathy among ninth-grade students learning Kannada Language in Chitradurga District. The population consists of ninth-grade students from government schools in Chitradurga city. A sample of 40 ninth-grade students was divided into two groups: an experimental group taught using theater-based teaching (N=20) and a control group taught using traditional methods (N=20). The intervention involves interactive theater exercises, role-playing activities and discussions centered on culturally relevant narratives and scenarios. A Randomized Matching Control Group Pre-test Post-Test design was employed with a total of 40 subjects selected for the study. The Student Sympathy Scale, developed by the researcher, was utilized to measure students’ sympathy, with 36 items rated on a Likert-type scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Reliability assessed through Cronbach’s alpha was found to be reliable. Descriptive and inferential analyses, including independent ‘t’ test was conducted. The results suggest that teaching with theater-based methods was more effective than conventional teaching methods in developing sympathy skills among ninth-grade students. This study highlights the potential of theater-based teaching approaches as effective pedagogical tools for nurturing sympathy among language learners. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on innovative educational practices and highlight the importance of integrating socio-emotional learning components into the language curriculum.
