The short story “The Postmaster” written by Rabindranath Tagore is a critique of the societal structures which give priority to duty and practicalities over the feelings of emotions. There are many dichotomies in the story like the Rich and the Poor, city and village, family and isolation, attachments and detachments. The postmaster’s arrival in the village, his emotional bonding with the orphan girl and his final decision to leave, all are driven by his willingness to do so. But the entire process of coming and leaving of the postmaster comes at the cost of Ratan’s heartbreak. The willing attachment and the willing detachment of the post master with the orphan girl Rattan throws a hint of the male domination in the Indian society along with the study of human psychology. Tagore, however, doesn’t offer a solution to the problem of detachment laced with practical resolutions, leaving the story with a melancholic undertone that lingers with the reader.
