Abstract: The emergence of the Community Radio movement in India, marked by the establishment of the first community radio station at Annamalai University, signifies a significant step towards amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. While community radio holds immense potential as a catalyst for local-level positive change, its role as a driver of growth remains largely untapped, mirroring global trends. This paper underscores the pivotal role of local/community radio in rural development, emphasizing its impact on various thematic areas such as agricultural transformation, participatory democracy, amplifying the voices of the marginalized, serving as an information and discussion platform for local issues, empowering underprivileged rural populations, and promoting good governance. The findings suggest the necessity for local authorities to leverage community radio in addressing these thematic areas to strengthen both rural development and community empowerment processes.
