Title

Functional Outcomes of Various Treatment Modalities for Distal Femur Fractures: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract

This prospective observational study evaluates the functional outcomes and complications associated with different treatment modalities for distal femur fractures at Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni. A total of 35 patients were included and treated using conservative methods (casting), intramedullary nailing (IMN), or locking compression plates (LCP). The study found that IMN led to significantly faster union times (mean 12.67 weeks), better range of motion (66.67% achieving full ROM), and fewer complications compared to LCP and cast methods. The LCP group showed a moderate improvement in functional outcomes but had a higher incidence of surgical site infections (SSI). Conservative methods, while non-invasive, resulted in prolonged immobilization, higher rates of malunion and non-union, and poor functional recovery. Based on these findings, IMN is recommended as the preferred treatment modality for distal femur fractures due to its superior functional outcomes and lower complication rates.
