This paper discusses rising difficulties in airline safety and challenges for aviation safety research. Along with evaluating the safety record of commercial passengers and examining aviation security as an increasingly important facet of aviation safety, it also includes the economic literature on the subject. Over a century has passed since the start of the commercial aviation industry, and safety has advanced dramatically. Traveling a large scheduled jet airline is the safest mode of commercial transportation because fatal accident rates have fallen below a specific level. However, there hasn't been a uniform distribution of safety performance throughout all countries and regions of the world, nor throughout all commercial aviation industries. Research on airplane safety has consistently shown, and continues to show, that emerging countries have much worse safety records.
