Usually, the buildings are constructed so as to fulfill current needs / demands but later on due to increase in demand the structure may need to rise vertically or expand horizontally. The horizontal expansion of the structure does not make any significant damage to the existing structure but the vertical extension may prove critical as the bearing capacity of the existing structure might not be sufficient to withstand the load of additional floors. For this a proper analysis must be done. Generally, an analytical model is prepared and the weak members are identified and appropriate strengthening measures are taken. This literature consists of review of some past cases where strengthening techniques were adopted.
