Title

Formulation and evaluation of gel for the treatment of oral submucous fibrosis

Abstract

The study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of an oral herbal gel containing turmeric, aloe vera, liquorice, and guava for the treatment of oral submucous fibrosis (osmf). Osmf is a chronic, progressive condition characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the oral mucosa, leading to restricted mouth opening and other complications. The selected herbal ingredients were chosen for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and healing properties. Turmeric (curcuma longa) is known for its active compound curcumin, which has strong anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects. Aloe vera (aloe barbadensis) promotes wound healing and has soothing properties. Liquorice (glycyrrhiza glabra) offers anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, while guava (psidium guajava) is rich in antioxidants and promotes tissue repair. The formulation process involved creating a gel base that effectively delivers these herbal extracts to the affected oral tissues. The prepared gel was evaluated for various parameters including ph, viscosity, spredability, and stability. Additionally, in vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to assess the gel's efficacy in reducing inflammation and fibrosis in osmf patients. The results demonstrated that the herbal gel significantly alleviated symptoms and improved the condition of the oral mucosa without any adverse effects. This study suggests that the herbal gel is a promising alternative therapy for managing osmf, providing a natural, effective, and patient-friendly treatment option.
