Title

Effect of Shape on Strength and Cost of Concrete Infilled Steel Tube Columns with and without Addition of Steel Fibres in a Multi-storeyed Building

Abstract

Presents an experimental and numerical study to investigate the compressive behaviour of concrete filled steel tubes (CFST). CFST of three different shapes are considered in this study filled with concrete and Hooked end steel fibre with different precentages (0% ,0 .5%, 1.0%, 1.5%). A nonlinear finite element (FE) numerical model using the commercial software package ANSYS is also developed and verified using the presented experimental results. The objective of the present study is to investigate the compressive behaviour of concrete filled steel tube columns using ANSYS. A concrete-filled steel tubular column is formed by filling a steel tube with concrete and hooked end steel fibre. Concrete filled steel tubular members are well recognized for their excellent performance owing to the combined merits of steel and concrete materials. In this project modelling of various cross section of column has been done by Finite element method using ANSYS. The models are loaded with concentric axial compression and resulting displacement values are recorded. A total of 144 specimens were tested with the software and compared with experimental study. Different specimens of circular, square, Rectangular cross section of M25 grade of concrete were modelled and analysed using ANSYS. The derived results from the analytical study were compared with the experimental results. From the comparison for 14 days, rectangular CFST columns max compressive strength is obtained for 1.5% of steel fibres with 74% more strength than 0% fibres. Also with respect to conventional concrete the strength (1.5%) is increased by 286%. From the comparison For 28 days, rectangular CFST columns max compressive strength is obtained for 1.5% of steel fibres with 76% more strength than 0% fibres. Also with respect to conventional concrete the strength (1.5%) is increased by 287%. From the comparison For 14 days, square CFST columns max compressive strength is obtained for 1.5% of steel fibres with 65% more strength than 0% fibres. Also with respect to conventional concrete the strength (1.5%) is increased by 262%. From the comparison For 28 days, square CFST columns max compressive strength is obtained for 1.5% of steel fibres with 62% more strength than 0% fibres. Also with respect to conventional concrete the strength (1.5%) is increased by 250%. Cost of CFST is relatively high when compared to normal specimens.
