Title

Merger of Kodagu in Karnataka, 1956: A Critical Survey of the Historiography

Abstract

Abstract: Kodagu or the erstwhile Coorg is one of the smallest districts in India. It is a hill district known for its natural landscapes and coffee plantations, and for the martial traditions of the Kodava community, which produced two eminent generals of the Indian army (Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa and General Thimmaiah), and a large number of hockey players too. The Coorgs also have a distinct cultural tradition. The British took over Coorg from the local Wodeyar Rajahs in 1834 and retained it as the Chief Commissioner’s province till 1947. The colonial rule, English education, plantation economy, etc., transformed the Kodavas into a modern community. After independence, the Kodavas wanted to be a separate state; but it was merged with the Karnataka state, much against the wishes of the Kodavas. The responses and reactions of the people are reflected in the historiography of the merger.
