Abstract: This article critically represents the metaphysical question regarding the locus of nescience (avidyā) which is raised as a fundamental issue in the Vedantic school of philosophy. In the inter-school dialogue of Advaita Vedanta, there are two different perspectives on this matter. According to the mainstream Vivaranׅׅvādins, the locus of avidyā is the supreme consciousness Brahman whereas to the Bhãmatĩ school, it is the jīva – the empirical self. Though the mainstream Vedantins have logically nullified the proposal of Bhãmatĩ, yet the arguments raised by the Bhãmatĩ school of thought are still relevant in the philosophical community as they serve certain pertinent philosophical significance that cannot trivially be refuted. This paper will show how the metaphysical concept of Avidyā's residence in Jīva is still critically pertinent in the realm of philosophy.
