Title

School Implementation and Preparedness on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management of El Salvador City Division

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of the school preparedness on disaster risk reduction and management measures in their respective schools in El Salvador City Division during the school year 2023-2024. Specifically, it sought to: 1) find the schools’ level of implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction Management (Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery); 2) find the teachers’ level of preparedness for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management measures in terms of safe learning facilities, school disaster management, and risk reduction and resilience education; and 3) determine the significant relationship between Disaster Risk Reduction Management and the preparedness on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management measures. The respondents of this study were the 203 elementary school teachers in the Division of El Salvador City where this study was conducted. A quantitative research design and descriptive correlational study, was used. A questionnaire was patterned and modified from D.O 37, s. 2015 was used in the study. The data collected were analyzed using mean score, mean percentage, standard deviation, and Pearson R Correlation. The study revealed that schools have a high level of implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction Management, with mitigation being the highest area and preparedness the lowest. In terms of disaster risk reduction and management measures, schools are well-prepared in terms safe learning environments, but less so in risk reduction and resilience education. There is a significant relationship between Disaster Risk Reduction Management and preparedness, with the strongest positive relationship observed between recovery and school disaster management. The study concluded that schools focused on recovery efforts following a disaster while demonstrating a higher level of preparedness for managing future disasters. The findings suggested that school administrators strengthen disaster preparedness efforts through comprehensive drilling programs, teachers develop lesson plans addressing risk reduction and resilience, and parents and student government officers actively participate in post-disaster assessments and planning processes to enhance schools' preparedness for future disasters.
