Title

Architectural Evolution of ADMS in the Era of Grid Modernization: Interoperability, Scalability, and Cybersecurity Challenges

Authors

Abstract

As the power grid has become increasingly data-driven and decentralized, the integration of Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) has become increasingly evident over the years. It has also solidified as the digital foundation of grid modernization projects. Based on the three listed dimensions (interoperability, scalability, and cybersecurity), this paper examines the architectural redesign of ADMS after 2020. It is based on recent case studies and peer-reviewed articles, following the evolution of SCADA systems from legacy systems to smart systems that incorporate real-time analytics, distributed energy resources (DERs), and edge computing. It discusses the ongoing issue of interoperability due to the presence of proprietary protocols, the limitations of the technology's scalability in processing IoT, AMI, and PMU data, and the growing importance of cybersecurity in protecting the grid infrastructure against advanced threats. The other example of best practices provided in the article relates to technological programs, such as jargon-free standardizations of protocols, predictive analysis using artificial intelligence, zero-trust security, and hybrid networks in communications. The synthesis of history and building designs, along with examples of practical applications, will provide an in-depth analysis of the readiness of modern ADMS to meet the changing demands of future power networks, as presented in this paper.
