Working women in Bihar constitute a significant yet under-acknowledged segment of the labour force. Their participation is shaped by socio-economic, cultural and structural factors deeply embedded in the state’s historical and developmental trajectory. Despite improvements in literacy, mobility, policy interventions, and socio-economic reforms, women in Bihar continue to face systemic inequalities. This research paper examines the socio-economic challenges faced by working women in Bihar by adopting a theoretical and sociological perspective. It analyses gender norms, patriarchy, caste and class structures, work participation patterns, wage discrimination, mobility restrictions, and institutional barriers. The paper also discusses feminist theoretical frameworks, labour market theories, and developmental perspectives that provide conceptual clarity to understand the issues. It concludes with a reflective evaluation of policy interventions and recommends structural changes required to create a gender-equitable work environment.
