Title

Challenges in Development: Cryogenic Engine in GSLV MkIII:Technological Hurdles

Authors

Abstract

The development of a 200 kN thrust-delivering cryogenic engine is presently being undertaken by ISRO. The next generation launch vehicle from ISRO, the GSLV Mk-III, will have its upper stage powered by this engine. Up to four-ton satellites will be able to be launched into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by the GSLV Mk-III. Ten years ago, this engine's development got underway, with an emphasis on creating and evaluating different sub-systems. The design, implementation, and testing of significant subsystems, including the gas generator, turbopumps, start-up system, and thrust chamber, followed the development of the injector element. Before carrying out a number of developmental tests in the integrated engine mode, these sub-systems were successfully developed and tested in stages. Other crucial parts, such as the igniter and control components, were also independently developed and qualified in addition to the main sub-systems. The development program encountered many difficulties in practically every branch of propulsion engineering. During the realization process, the engine's systems engineering presented unique challenges. This paper offers a summary of the technological obstacles faced in important engine development-related domains, along with an analysis of the approaches and strategies employed to surmount these obstacles.
