Title

'The Narrative of the Marginalized in India : A Study of A. Revathi's The Truth about Me: A Hijra Life Story'

Abstract

Literature is a representation of life and realities reflecting the society have often become the source of literary material for writers. For more than two decades from now, literary depictions of the marginalized sections have gained greater significance. In this direction, literature by the transgenders has also gained ground and attracted the attention of enthusiastic researchers. Personal accounts of several transgenders promoting empathy, and advocating for the rights and recognition of the transgender community are published all over the world. Transgender literature in India is as diverse as the country itself, spanning multiple languages, regions, and themes. From autobiographical accounts documenting personal journeys of self-discovery and resilience to fictional narratives challenging traditional gender norms, each work contributes to a larger discourse on gender identity and social justice. While transgender are a part of every community all over the world and personal accounts of several transgenders are published in the form of autobiographies ,autobiographical works like “Me Hijra , Me Lakshmi “ by Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi and “ I am Vidya “ by Living Smile Vidya offer powerful insights into the lives of Hijras, their struggles and aspirations. One such autobiography is A. Revathi’s "The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story". It is a piercing memoir that offers a glimpse into the life of a hijra in India, which explores the themes of identity, community, and survival. Revathi’s autobiographical work is discussed to reveal not only her personal misfortunes but also the broader implications for the hijra community. It also seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by those who exist outside the conventional gender spectrum and the urgent need for societal transformation towards inclusivity and acceptance.
