Abstract

The tradition of Sanskrit poetry as known in Odisha began in the 12th century with the composition of Ashtapadis of Jayadeva. The Sanskrit songs of Geeta Govinda are indirect ancestral lines of songs and musical poetry in Odisha. The Geeta Govinda discovered Sambhoga and Vipralambha Sringara. The love between Krishna(nayaka), Radha(nayika), the cowherds and the youthful association with the Gopies, may be friends, Sakhi messenger or Duti. A friend is attached to another by affection or esteem or a favoured companion and a messenger is a person who carries a message or is employed to carry the message.
