Title

Landslide Susceptibility Zonation Using Weighted Overlay Analysis in Parts of Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India

Abstract

In the Himachal and Himalayan regions of India, landslides create a serious natural danger that results in severe damage to infrastructure and fatalities. In this study, landslip susceptibility zones in particular regions of the Kangra Valley will be defined through the use of weighted overlay analysis (WOA) in a Geographic Information System (GIS) setting. The approach incorporates multiple thematic layers, each given a suitable weight based on how important a role they play in causing landslides, including slope, aspect, rainfall, faultline, elevation and proximity to rivers. The region is divided into zones of low, moderate, high, and extremely high landslip susceptibility on the resulting landslip susceptibility map. The results show a robust association between high susceptibility zones and past landslip occurrences and they are corroborated using current landslip inventories. For disaster management and mitigation planning in the area, this research offers a crucial tool.
