Title

Assessment of Laterally Loaded Piles: Comparative analysis between Indian Standards and Finite Element Method (FEM)

Authors

Abstract

The most widely employed deep foundation technique in weak soils are the construction of Piles which transfer significant amount of load from superstructures into deeper soil strata. The complex phenomena of Soil-Pile interaction is mainly dependent on characteristics of Soil and Pile along with the type of loading. Present research analyzed the pile loading capacity in homogeneous soils by comparing the results of Indian Standard method (IS 2911-2010) with Finite Element method (FEM). A single pile having variable diameter (1 to 2 m) and variable length (10 to 20 m) were subjected to a maximum deflection of 5 mm to find corresponding pile load capacity by considering multiple case scenarios using both the methods IS and FEM. Current research highlighted homogeneous clay soils having higher lateral load capacity for piles having lager diameter, larger length and high modulus of subgrade reaction. FEM approach proved to be more precise than conventional IS-code method. FEM approach also gave high values of load and Bending Moment for piles having larger diameter with shorter lengths in sandy soils.
