Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin molecules that cause red blood cells to take on a crescent or sickle shape. This condition affects millions of people worldwide. SCD significantly impacts the health and quality of life of individuals affected by the disease. The primary cause of SCD is a mutation in the gene responsible for producing hemoglobin, known as the beta-globin gene (HBB) gene. This gene mutation produces abnormal hemoglobin called hemoglobin S (HbS), which differs from normal adult hemoglobin (HbA) in its molecular structure. HbS causes red blood cells to become stiff and sticky, resulting in their deformation and reduced ability to flow through small blood vessels.
