Title

Subaltern Women’s Voice and Subversive Cry for Emancipation in Indira Goswami’s Novels

Abstract

It is observed that the life of Indian women becomes pathetic and challenging as and when they are dominated by age-old social customs in a patriarchal culture. Indira Goswami extensively deals with such themes and issues in her fictional works. Through her works Goswami shows deep concern for the underprivileged women showing her deep empathy and seeking their emancipation. While doing so, she raises questions about several facets of women’s subdued conditions in society. Foremost among them are society’s attitudes towards girls’ children, marriage and widowhood. Her women characters face innumerable dilemmas as they prefer to accept society’s norms and like to remain silent and voiceless. Her characters though hardly stand against the oppressors or the dominant authority, but sometimes are subversive and break the silence crying for emancipation. The present study is an attempt to analyse Goswami’s marginalized women characters emphasizing upon the widows who cry in secrecy for freedom though they lack required sufficient voices.
