Title

Revising exotic plant-based economy in Harappan period of India: A bird's eyeview

Authors

Abstract

India is although regarded oldest civilizations, it has also followed the doctrine that good products, practices and resources should be welcomed and absorbed from all possible sides without discrimination. Indians domesticated indigenous plant species for human sustenance from time to time but also at the same time bioprospected potentially valuable useful exotic plant species and made them integral part of Indian economy and culture. The present account is an attempt to assess socio-economy of the Harappan (Indus) civilization based particularly on exotic crop species vis-à-vis initiated plant invasion in the then India. Various exotic crop species viz. cereals and millets (09 species), leguminous crops (10 species), oil and fibre yielding crops (06 species) and miscellaneous crop species (10 species) have been limelighted which lent economic support and human sustenance in Harappan period of India. Their nativities (places of origin) are also ascertained which are indicative of trade-contacts of the then Indians with the other world. The present author re-assessed archaeobotanical information based on exotic plants sources for the dual purposes viz., socio-economy of Harappan people and plant-invasion (bioinvasion) in ancient period of India.
