Title

School Heads’ Leadership Competence and School-Based Management Practices: Basis for School Heads’ Development Plan

Abstract

School heads play a pivotal role in the success of school-based management (SBM) initiatives. Specifically, it sought to determine 1. the level of school heads’ leadership competence, 2. the level of school-based management practices of school heads as perceived by the teachers, and 3. the significant relationship between the school heads’ leadership competence and school-based management practices in the Division of Bukidnon during the School Year 2023-2024. A descriptive correlational research method was used in the study to explore the level of school heads’ leadership competence and school-based management practices of school heads among two hundred (200) school heads and two hundred (200) conveniently chosen teachers. The researcher used a universal sampling for school head respondents while for the teacher respondents, convenience sampling was employed to select participants, and standard and modified questionnaires were employed as the main data-gathering tools in identifying and establishing the relationships between and among the variables. The researcher used statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) to determine the significant relationship between the school heads’ leadership competence and school-based management practices. The findings of the study revealed that the level of school heads’ leadership competence was Highly Competent. It also showed that the level of school-based management practices of school heads was Highly Practiced. Moreover, the level of school heads’ leadership competence and school-based management practices have a significant correlation in people development and oral communication. The study concluded that the more school heads demonstrate a high level of leadership competence, the higher the level of school-based management practices. The study recommends that school heads should maintain exemplary and good role models in manifesting the different competencies by continuously and actively participating in mentorship programs, offering opportunities for professional development, and encouraging leadership succession planning within educational institutions. The implementation of the proposed development plan should be utilized to ensure continuous improvement in school management practices.
