Title

Prom Parties and Students’ Discipline among Government Aided Secondary Schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda

Abstract

The investigation pursued to examine a contribution of prom parties upon students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda. Three distinct goals served as the study's guidelines namely; (i) to examine the contribution of prom party events on students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda, (ii) to examine the contribution of prom party venue on students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda and (iii) to examine the contribution of prom party supervision on students’ discipline in selected secondary schools in Makindye division-Kampala City-Uganda. A mixed method was used in the cross- sectional research design of the study. This study constituted of a sample size of 70 respondents including school administrators and school teachers selected using both census inquiry and simple random sampling techniques respectively. Both interview guides and questionnaires were used to gather data. The acquired data was subjected to descriptive analysis, regression analysis, and thematic analysis. The results indicated that prom party events have a moderately positive and statistically significant contribution on students’ discipline among government aided senior educational institutions within Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda. The investigation showed that prom party venue has a moderately positive and statistically significant contribution on students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda. Furthermore, the study revealed that prom party supervision has a strong positive and statistically significant contribution on students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda. The study concludes that prom parties have a significant contribution on students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda in that an enhancement in prom party events, prom party venue, and prom party supervision would resultantly lead to an improvement in students’ discipline among government aided secondary schools in Makindye Division – Kampala, Uganda. The study recommends that; prom parties should be held at school premises for full enforcement of discipline and should take place during day time; students should be well prepared and made aware of expectations of the party and informed of the dos and don’ts to guard against illicit behaviors; and party supervisors should always check students before the party for any illegal items like drugs, alcohol, indecent dressing and action taken immediately.
