Title

Welfare and Teachers’ Performance in Government-Aided Secondary Schools in Mpigi District, Uganda.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between teachers’ welfare and teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district, Uganda. The study was guided by three specific objectives; i) To establish the relationship between housing for teachers and teachers’ performance, ii) To examine the relationship between meals for teachers and teachers’ performance, and iii) To investigate the relationship between medical care for teachers and teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district. The study employed a correlational research design with a mixed method approach. A sample size of 48 respondents was considered constituting of a head teacher, deputy head teacher, director of studies, school director, and teachers from the selected government-aided secondary school in the district. Both descriptive analysis and correlation analysis was employed to provide answers to the study objectives. The study revealed that there is a strong positive and statistically significant relationship between housing for teachers and teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district. The study also revealed that there is a very strong positive and statistically significant relationship between meals for teachers and teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district. Additionally, the study revealed that there is a strong positive and statistically significant relationship between medical care for teachers and teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district. Therefore, the study concludes that teachers’ welfare has a statistically significant association with teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district in that an increase in the different forms of teachers’ welfare such as meals, housing, and medical care resultantly leads to an improvement in teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools in Mpigi district. The study recommends that the government and secondary schools’ administrators should ensure efficiency and promote teachers’ welfare such as provision of meals, housing facilities, and medical care as these play a significant role in enhancing their motivation and satisfaction levels which would resultantly lead to an improvement in the overall performance and productivity of teachers in Mpigi district.
