Abstract The issue of gender equality and women empowerment has become a crucial agenda in global and local discourses, and its dynamics vary across different cultural and social contexts. This paper puts an attempt to study and explores the politics of women empowerment within the Zeliang Naga society, a sub-group of the Naga tribes in Northeast India. The study investigates the historical, cultural and socio-political factors that influence and determined women's roles in Zeliang society. The paper highlights the traditional customs and challenges faced by Zeliang Naga women in achieving empowerment in the process and the role of traditional institutions, gender norms and modern political movements in shaping their status. The paper also gives a critical analysis of the interplay between tradition and modernity and also seeks to understand the complexities of women empowerment in a patriarchal society of the Zeliang Nagas. The study concludes by offering insights into how empowerment initiatives can be more effectively designed to achieve a higher place for the women in the society by aligning with the unique cultural context of the Zeliang Nagas.
