Title

ANALYSIS OF WATER FOOTPRINT OF SUGARCANE FOR BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION IN UTTAR PRADESH IN INDIA

Abstract

Sugarcane plays an essential role in the economy of India. It examines the blue and green water elements involved in growing Sugarcane while taking irrigation and rainfall into account. Understanding the possible effects of ethanol production on local and regional water supplies requires such evaluations. The study highlights the necessity for site-specific strategies by examining the diversity in water footprint across various geographic regions and crop methodologies. Additionally, it emphasizes possible methods for reducing the water footprint, including improving farming practices, increasing water usage effectiveness, and implementing cutting-edge processing technology. Crop water requirements and, consequently, the blue and green water footprint of Sugarcane crop for the production of biofuel (ethanol) have been assessed in eight districts namely Agra, Aligarh, Bahraich, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Lucknow and Mainpuri, of Uttar Pradesh, India, using the CROPWAT approach described in the water footprint assessment handbook. Sugarcane production data from 2014-2015 to 2020-2021 were used to test the model. CROPWAT method was used to model the production process.
