HPTLC Finger Print Analysis and Evaluation of Heavy Metals for Citrullus colocynthis Root

Abstract

In recent years, throughout the world peoples are turning to make use of medicinal plant products in their healthcare system. Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad is one of the most efficient traditional medicine used to cure various diseases like gastrointestinal problems, skin injuries, bacterial infections, constipation, edema, cancer, diabetes, etc. Standardization and quality control with proper integration of modern scientific techniques and traditional knowledge is most important to prepare herbal drugs. The presence of important bioactive compounds in Citrullus colocynthis makes them pharmacologically valuable. Therefore, in the present study, the HPTLC analysis of Citrullus colocynthis (root) in chloroform and ethanol extract was performed for its phytochemical profiling. This study concluded that Citrullus colocynthis (root) chloroform and ethanol extract contains a several phytochemical constituents which might be accountable for its therapeutic value and thus justifies its traditional use. The heavy metals like Cd, Pb, As and Hg were also identified by AAS. The content of identified heavy metals was found to be within the prescribed permissible limit. This results concluded that the plant material, C. colocynthis root is safe and may not produce any harmful effect of metal toxicity during their therapeutic applications.
