Title

Shedding Light on the Lived Experiences of English Teachers: A Qualitative Inquiry in Teaching Literature

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to examine the experiences of Grade 10 English teachers teaching literature in Mabini District, Mabini, Davao De Oro. Data were collected from fourteen participants through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. This study explores the experiences of Grade 10 English teachers in teaching literature, focusing on the challenges, coping mechanisms, and insights that shape their instructional practices. Findings reveal that teachers face significant obstacles, including students' reading and comprehension difficulties, lack of vocabulary, and varying levels of engagement. These issues often stem from students' boredom, disinterest, and challenges in expressing themselves in English. Teachers employ varied strategies to address these difficulties, such as using multimedia resources, relating texts to real-life contexts, and implementing differentiated activities to cater to diverse reading levels. To navigate these challenges, teachers frequently seek support from colleagues, leverage technology, and pursue professional development opportunities like training and seminars. Insights from the study underscore the need for targeted training programs and adaptive teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and address reading comprehension issues. Strengthening collaboration among teachers and fostering a supportive network enhances the sharing of effective practices and contributes to improved teaching efficacy. The study highlights the importance of interactive and relatable approaches in literature education to deepen student engagement and appreciation. Ultimately, it emphasizes the multifaceted nature of teaching literature, advocating for continuous professional growth and collaborative efforts to support student learning and achievement in literature classes.
