Title

PERFORMANCE OF INDIAN TEA EXPORT DURING THE WTO REGIME: AN ANALYSIS OF THE GROWTH, INSTABILITY AND DIRECTION

Abstract

Export is considered as the engine of economic growth and assumed an important place in the development of any country. Huge amount of foreign exchange is required for the essential imports like food grains and petroleum products and also for achieving rapid growth. As a highly populated nation, India has to create job opportunities for the youths. Export earning is considered as the safe way of obtaining foreign exchange from mercantilist period and it is considered as sign of the strength of nation. Export of traditional products not only gives foreign exchange, but also employment to large number of people. Tea is a traditional product of India whose production process is highly intensive in semi and unskilled labour, and also a source of foreign exchange. The new world trade scenario with the establishment of WTO has also affected India’s tea export. The study examined the performance of Indian tea export in the WTO regime and Pre-WTO period taking the data from 1985 to 2023 using the growth of export -both AAGR and CAGR, instability in the growth by using Standard Deviation and trend of growth rate by using the Ordinary Least Square Method. The change in the directions of tea export during the WTO period is analysed by using the percentage share of export to each destination during 1994-95 and 2022-23. Considering the growth, instability and trend of tea export during the Pre-WTO period and WTO period, and change in the direction of export during the WTO period, the analysis reveals that the overall performance of Indian tea export during the WTO regime is satisfactory.
