Title

ROAD RAGES IN INDIA AND LESS PUNISHMENT: EXAMINING THE IMPACT

Authors

Abstract

Road rage is increasing these days. When road users feel threatened, they become violently aggressive and committed criminals on the roads. This can appear in many forms, such as shouting and verbal abuse, rude gestures, dangerous driving and fighting. The implication of road rage is grave and wide-ranging affecting not only the individuals involved but also society at large. Aggressive driving brings more accidents thus also injuries and deaths on the road. Research shows that the cause of a large number of traffic accidents is road rage. This is a matter which must be dealt with at once. Offenders will suffer legal consequences, such as fines, loss of license or criminal charges, which only add complexity to their lives. Both perpetrators and victims can suffer lasting psychological effects. This in turn affects their attitudes to driving in future. Furthermore, road rage can break down mutual trust between drivers, creating an atmosphere of enmity and aggression which undermines the bonds of community. A comprehensive plan of action is necessary to deal effectively with road rage. Public information campaigns enlighten drivers as to the evils of road rage and moderate tone of drive in a significant way. Supporting road rage awareness domestically elevates the skill with which new drivers can cope with stress. Stiffer penalties for aggressive driving can act as deterrents. Effective comprehensive specific laws with deterrent effect needs to be implemented to tackle these emerging ramifications of road rages.
