Title

Does stress affect implantation rate? A Prospective study on Perceived stress and implantation rate among women undergoing IVF

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Infertility has been identified as a stressor that can lead to psychological problems. Over the last three decades, remarkable advancements in assisted reproductive technology (ART) including in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) resulted in a significant number of new pregnancies but In vitro fertilization treatment is psychologically as well as physically very demanding for women. This study assessed perceived stress level and its effect on implantation rate among women undergoing IVF treatment Method: This prospective study recruited 100 eligible women undergoing IVF treatment after their registration for IVF during their visit to IVF unit. Perceived stress scale was used to assess the stress level. Implantation rate was assessed by examining the laboratory results report of women between 12th to 14th days after embryo transplantation. Results: Out of 100 samples study findings indicate that 51% of women were between ages of 31 to 35 years, 96% women have primary infertility, 60% women were receiving infertility treatment from 6 to 10 years and 72% have had more than two round of IVF treatment. Study also showed a statistically significant relationship between stress score and implantation rate, with 27% women reporting higher perceived stress scores and 71% reporting moderate level of stress. Only 6 of the 27 women who experience a high level of perceived stress became pregnant. Conclusion: Rates of stress among women undergoing IVF treatment are higher than in general population. If the stress level is high during IVF treatment process than implantation rate is lower. So the finding of the study suggested that it is essential and recommended that there is need for mental and environmental health modifications, as well as the provision of coping techniques and resources for women, so that women can minimize and manage their level of stress during the treatment process.
