Title

The Ethos on River: An Ecocritical Study of Easterine Kire's Son of the Thundercloud

Abstract

The early Naga tribes of Nagaland of North East India were spiritually bound to nature and they were inseparably interconnected with the functions of the various elements of nature. The Nagas honed an animistic faith in the phenomenal earth and they treated every inanimate objects of nature to be embedded in living spirits. The traditional Naga religious belief system was hemmed in the specific ecological setting of the region and they were pertaining to the everyday life and livelihood. The Naga ethos of ecospirituality is evident in their myths, legends, folklore or folk songs that have been handed down orally from one generation to the other. The traditional Naga tribes including all other tribes living in North East India worshiped nature and revered all its elements such as trees, groves, forests, rivers, rocks, stones, hills, mountains and the non human creatures. Like the other indigenous pagan belief system, they treated nature with great respect. The present paper deals with how the Naga Eco spirituality is featured by Easterine Kire in her most acclaimed fiction Son of the Thundercloud. The paper draws its theoretical concept from the discipline of ecocritical studies in the critical analysis.
