Title

AI IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION: CAPABILITIES, LIMITATIONS, AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

Authors

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is designed to mimic human intelligence, performing tasks traditionally requiring human input. This technology, manifested in systems like ChatGPT, Bard, and others, has gained widespread use across various professions, including the legal field. AI excels in automating tasks such as drafting legal documents, creating agreements, and assisting with research through expert systems, speech recognition, and natural language processing. However, despite its efficiency, AI lacks emotional intelligence and the depth of experience needed to provide legal advice or make judgements. It cannot replace the nuanced understanding of a seasoned lawyer or judge, especially in applying precedents, moral values, and emotional context in legal decisions. While AI can accelerate legal work by aiding in research and routine tasks, it does not possess the comprehensive knowledge required for offering legal consultation or reaching verdicts. Therefore, AI should be viewed as a tool to assist legal professionals rather than a replacement. This article encourages the informed use of AI while recognizing its limitations in the legal domain, particularly its inability to replicate the experience and human insight essential for legal practice. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Legal Profession, Emotional Intelligence, Legal Assistance etc.
