Title

A comprehensive review on mechanical properties of mortar and concrete containing ceramic waste as aggregate and cement replacement

Abstract

Concrete and mortar are essential construction materials composed of cement, aggregates (like sand and gravel), and water. Their production contributes significantly to environmental challenges due to natural resource depletion and CO₂ emissions. This review explores how ceramic waste, a by-product of the ceramic industry, can be used in construction. Ceramic waste, including coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, and powdered forms, offers a sustainable solution by reducing landfill waste, conserving natural resources, and lowering the carbon footprint of cement production. Incorporating ceramic waste into concrete and mortar has shown promising results in improving various properties such as strength, durability, and workability. This paper reviews the fresh (workability), mechanical (strength) of concrete and mortar when ceramic waste is used. The results of workability for up-to 50% replacement are within recommended range, compressive strength shows similar results up-to 10-15% replacement, flexural strength increases with ceramic amount increment to 20% replacement, splitting tensile strength increases with ceramic amount increment to 30-40% replacement and modulus of elasticity increases with ceramic amount increment to 20% replacement.
