Title

Experimental Study on the Performance of Multi Pass Low Cost Solar Air Heater

Abstract

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of a cost-effective multi-pass solar air heater (SAH) constructed using upcycled aluminium beverage cans. Solar air heaters are widely known for their potential to convert solar energy into thermal energy, yet they frequently encounter limitations such as suboptimal heat transfer and significant heat losses, resulting in reduced thermal efficiency. To address these challenges, the research introduces an innovative SAH design where aluminium cans serve a dual purpose as both the absorber plate and air duct, with specific design modifications aimed at enhancing heat transfer and minimizing heat loss. Through extensive experimental testing conducted across various seasons, including summer, rainy, and winter conditions, the study meticulously measured key parameters such as temperature variations, heat transfer rates, and overall system efficiency. Results indicated that the multi-pass configuration outperformed traditional single-pass SAHs by significantly improving thermal efficiency, with performance varying depending on the seasonal environment. Additionally, a cost analysis revealed the system’s economic viability, positioning it as an affordable and sustainable solution for solar air heating. The research contributes to the field by offering both experimental validation and mathematical modeling, thus filling a crucial gap in existing literature, while also proposing practical recommendations for further optimizing the design and performance of SAHs under diverse environmental conditions.
