Title

BASICS OF PHARMACEUTICAL DOSAGE FORMS

Abstract

Pharmaceutical dosage forms play a pivotal role in modern medicine, offering a multitude of options for drug delivery to meet diverse patient needs. This comprehensive review scrutinizes a spectrum of pharmaceutical dosage forms, encompassing tablets, capsules, powders, lozenges, suspensions, emulsions, ointments, gels, and inhalers. It delves into their specific characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, methods of preparation, and evaluation techniques. The review begins by dissecting the most common conventional dosage forms, namely tablets and capsules. These classic forms are celebrated for their ease of administration, stability, and precise dosing. However, they do come with challenges such as swallowing difficulties and delayed drug release, which are addressed in detail. Powders, lozenges, and suspensions are explored for their unique applications. Powders offer versatility and rapid dissolution, while lozenges provide localized drug delivery to the oral cavity. Suspensions, with their particulate nature, present challenges in terms of settling and dosing accuracy. Emulsions, ointments, and gels represent topical dosage forms, with distinct advantages in delivering drugs through the skin. Their preparation methods, which involve the mixing of immiscible ingredients, are discussed along with their potential drawbacks. Inhalers, crucial for respiratory medications, are evaluated for their efficiency in delivering drugs directly to the lungs. The complexity of manufacturing and the challenges associated with formulation consistency are highlighted. Evaluation methods, including dissolution testing, stability studies, in vitro and in vivo assessments, and compliance with regulatory standards, are emphasized throughout the review. These are essential for ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of pharmaceutical dosage forms. A comprehensive understanding of the various pharmaceutical dosage forms, their types, strengths, limitations, methods of preparation, and evaluation techniques is paramount for both the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare professionals. This review provides a detailed examination of these crucial aspects, shedding light on the diverse options available for drug delivery in the field of modern medicine.
