Title

Women’s Participation Status and Constraints in Rice Production in Fogera District of Northwest Ethiopia

Abstract

This study was conducted in Fogera district, where rice is a means of livelihood, South Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. A total sample of 197 women farmer respondents was selected by using Yemane’s formula. A purposive and simple random sampling method was applied. Both qualitative and quantitative research techniques were used. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, participation index and Garrett’s problem ranking method. The results showed that age, education level, marital status, credit service, distance to rice main market and use of extension service were significantly associated with women participation in rice production. Moreover, the participation index result indicated that women were actively participated in all activities except plowing of land. However, they participate by confronting many constraints. According to Garrett’s problem ranking method, the present research result indicated that fertilizer shortages, floods and weeds were the major constraints for rice-producing female farmers. Hence, we recommend that women should be acknowledged for their active participation in each activities of rice production and invite them in any rice development plat form as one main actor. Furthermore, provide fertilizer on appropriate time, deliver extension and affordable collateral credit service for women farmers to enhance rice production.
