Title

Comparative crystals system and its micrometric including phytochemical evaluation of Yavakshara from Yavapanchanga and Yava seeds

Abstract

Kshara is considered as one of Shastra Pranidhana (Surgical) treatments among the three broad categories of treatments as Antah Parimarjana (Internal treatments), Bahih Parimarjana (External treatments) and Shastra Pranidhana. Almost all classics mention that Kshara are to be used in externally or internally according to the ailments of the body. These Kshara having qualities like Ushna (hot), Tikshna (sharp), Pachana (Digestion), Shodhana (Purification), Ropana (healing), Shoshana, Sthambhan (to block), and Lekhana (scraping) etc. Yavakshara is commonly used Kshara formulation to treat Shula(pain), Anaha (flatulence), Adhmana (general tympanitis), Mutrakruccha (difficulty in micturition), Kanthavikara (diseases of throat) and Amlapitta (acid-peptic-disorder)9. This study aims at comparison between (Panchanga and seeds) Yavakshara on the basis of pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical evaluation. Materials and methods: Yavapanchanga and Yava seeds (whole plant and seeds of Hordeum vulgare Linn.) was collected, and authentication was done by the expert. Yavapanchanga Kshara (YPK) and Yava seeds Kshara (YSK) were prepared as proposed by Rasa Tarangini. Pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical analyses were carried out according to standard protocol. Observation and results: Both the Kshara showed their own peculiar crystal system and analytical findings showed higher yield, pH value (10) and potassium and sodium content (6.1%) in YSK as compared to YPK. Discussion: Quantitative micrometric microscopy showed a greater number of crystals in TAK (14/mm2) than MAK (9/mm2), which may be due to seeds having more amount of potassium and sodium. pH of YPK and YSK was 10.10 and 9.32, respectively. This result showed that YSK is more alkaline. Conclusion: Sodium and potassium ion concentration was higher in YSK (Na+ = 5.4%, K+ = 42%) as compared to YPK (Na+ = 3.1%, K+ = 37%). These findings can be further used for the standardization purpose of Yava seeds and Yavapamchanga which may enrich the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
