Title

A BRIEF STUDY : CHANDRAYAAN PROGRAMME

Abstract

The Chandrayaan programme, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is a series of ambitious lunar research missions designed to improve our understanding of the Moon's 1 geology, mineralogy, and prospective resources. The first mission, Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, marked India's entry into planetary exploration and yielded major results, including the discovery of water molecules on the lunar surface. This mission used a variety of scientific instruments to map the Moon's surface and examine its composition, dramatically altering our understanding of lunar geology. This summary reviews the objectives, methodologies and results of the Chandrayaan missions while analyzing their implications for future exploration of the Moon. The program not only showcases India's growing capabilities in space technology but also contributes to global scientific knowledge about the Moon and its resources. Building on these achievements, Chandrayaan-2 was launched in 2019 with an orbiter, lander, and rover to investigate the Moon's unexplored south polar region. Although the lander encountered difficulties throughout its descent, the orbiter continues to deliver useful information. The latest Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully landed on August 23, 2023, making India the first country to accomplish a soft landing in this region.
