Title

Ecosophic Flickers: Reflection on Deep Ecology and Environmental Video-Art

Abstract

Contemporary art has expanded its borders and somehow de-territorialised itself. In the academic lingo, some of these categories could be referred to as interdisciplinary practices. Occasionally, registrations of some practices and thoughts are so pressing that they baffle viewers looking for categorial nomination. Some contemporary videos are thus driven by environmentally led social concerns. In the span of this short essay, I will try to figure out ways of making sense of two such videos by two authors— Amar Kanwar and Ursula Biemann — who pushed the borders of categories like art, videos, and environmental thoughts. The shutdown of society caused by the pandemic gave us time to pause, reflect, and rethink our coexistence and relationship with nature and the environment. It allowed us to understand that our living conditions on Earth are more fragile than we previously thought. Rather than describing what is now being produced by capitalism and other actors as a warehoused world full of lost souls, it is possible to think of different means of describing how the future is being scripted.
