Title

HYDROLOGICAL AND WATER QUALITY SIMULATION OF THE GOMTI RIVER FOR LUCKNOW CITY USING THE WEAP MODEL: ANALYZING THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS MITIGATION STRATEGIES

Abstract

Surface water quality assessment and mapping are crucial because Surfacewater's physical and chemical properties dictate whether or not it is suitable for use in home, industrial, and agricultural settings. The physico-chemical characteristics of river water discharged from Gomti river in Uttar Pradesh are the subject of this paper. The hazardous character of the gathered river water samples has been shown by an overall analysis. A few years ago, the Gomti River near Lucknow, India, was a significant source of water for several purposes. But given the speed at which the world is changing, the river's current state is extremely dangerous from the perspectives of the ecology, aesthetics, and commercial use. The study analyzed temperature, dissolved oxygen, and biological oxygen demand (BOD) as water parameters. Thusforth, the present study endeavor was centered around evaluating the existing state of affairs and forecasting its future state through several scenarios. A numerical simulation tool called Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) was used to model the quality of river water under two different scenarios: business as usual (BAU) and scenario with mitigating measures. Water quality has been reproduced throughout a 24-kilometer stretch of the Gomti River from Manjhighat to Pipraghat. When simulated water quality characteristics for the present and BAU condition are compared, it is evident that by 2030, the water quality would drastically decline and become unsuitable for many aquatic life forms. The results of a scenario with mitigating measures point to the need for swift and comprehensive action because the current planned wastewater treatment facilities and regulations are insufficient to achieve the desired river water quality within class B.
