Title

INVESTIGATING THE STATE OF CLERGY’S WELLNESS IN ANGLICAN DIOCESES IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Abstract This study investigated the state of clergy’s wellness in the Anglican diocese, using southwest Nigeria as a case study. The study examined the state of clergy’s wellness and how it differs in relation to their designation, annual income, church capacity, and number of times transferred. The study engaged the descriptive research of the survey research design with 1200 samples, of which only 1164 respondents, from whom a completed questionnaire was retrieved, made the valid sample. A self-constructed and structured questionnaire titled ‘Clergy Wellness Questionnaire (CWQ) was used for the study. The instrument was validated through face, content, construct validity, and internal consistency and reliability (Crombach Alpha Method). A certified face and content validity was ensured, with construct validity (convergent) and reliability yielding coefficients of -0.72 and 0.83, respectively. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency count, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (T-test and ANOVA), all at the 0.05 level of significance. However, it was established in the study that the state of clergy’s wellness in the Anglican Communion in Southwest Nigeria is only fair and that the church authorities will need to do a lot for improvement. The study also found that the wellness of the clergy’s only varies in respect of the number of times they are transferred and the church capacity they manage, not by their designation or annual income earned. It was however recommended that the church authorities review the transfer plan of clergies and employ or post more clergies to churches with more capacities to reduce workload and burnout.
