Title

Advancing Textile Waste Management: Exploring Recycling Methods and Industry Challenges

Abstract

The rising global population has led to an increase in textile consumption, which has generated large volume of textile waste. Rapid change of fashion in the clothing industry contributes to this waste with millions of tons of textiles either ending up in landfills or in recycling. Textile waste is categorised into post-consumer, pre-consumer, and post-industrial waste, with synthetic fibres requiring centuries to breakdown and inflicting environmental harm. This paper emphasises the significance of recycling textile waste, which conserves resources such as water and energy while mitigating pollution and decreasing landfill space. Various recycling processes, such as up cycling and down cycling, mechanical, chemical and biochemical recycling are discussed. Exploration of innovative recycling processes includes utilising textile waste for thermal and acoustic insulation, packaging, and 3D printing. Nonetheless, obstacles such as consumer ignorance, insufficient garbage collection infrastructure, and technological impediments impede the extensive implementation of recycling techniques. The future of textile waste management depends on heightened consumer awareness, governmental legislation, technology innovations, and industry partnerships to foster sustainable practices. This research underscores the necessity for comprehensive textile recycling to alleviate the environmental consequences of the expanding textile industry.
