Title

Assessing the stability of the relationship between Land surface temperature and Land use / Land cover indices and its validation through spatial analysis

Abstract

The recognition of places at risk for indefensible land use, lower-quality environments, and particularly urban heat islands (UHI) can be aided by tracking fluctuations in Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) indices, and Land Surface Temperature (LST). In Lucknow City, this study desires to investigate the evolving patterns of land use and land cover (LULC), the dynamics of geospatial indices (Normalized difference vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized difference built-up Index (NDBI), Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), Normalized Difference Bareness Index (NDBaI), and LST patterns with their relationships between 2020 and 2023. The spectral indices mentioned above have been estimated using Landsat 8 data. While NDVI, MNDWI, and LST have an inverse stable association, NDBI, NDBaI, and LST are positively correlated. The results indicate that to safeguard the LST and the issues it raises, there must be a large number of water features, a healthy amount of covering of vegetation, enough free space, and fewer built-up areas. Because it offers a scientific foundation and recommendations to promote environmentally friendly urban management and growth in Lucknow and other cities, this research might be a useful tool for planners and policymakers.
