⮚ Osteoarthritis is most common joint disorder in world, as it is ranked 11th highest contributor to global disability and 38th highest in disability adjusted life years. [11] According to World Health Organization (WHO) OA is the second commonest musculoskeletal problem in the world population (30%) after back pain (50%). [9] In western population it is one of the most frequent causes of pain, loss of function and disability in adults. Radiographic evidence suggest of Osteoarthritis occurs in the majority of people by 65 years of age and in about 80% of those aged over 75 years. In the US it is second only to ischemic heart disease as cause of work disability in men over 50 years of age and accounts for more hospitalization than Rheumatoid arthritis each year. [13] ⮚ The pooled global incidence of knee OA was 203 per 10,000 person-year in individuals aged 20 and over. Correspondingly, there are around annual 86.7 million individuals (20 years and older) with incident knee OA in 2020 worldwide. [14] As I started my post-graduation study here and went to see so many patients in college OPDs, I observed the number of patients increasing with complaints of joint pain as chief complaint or associated with other diseases like hypertension, diabetes, etc. ⮚ Homoeopathy is the 2nd and most widely used complementary and alternative medicine in health care system. [15] Patient survey around the world shows consistent selection of homoeopathic medicine is due to its satisfactory result over conventional medicine, adverse effects of conventional medicine lead to only limited dose could be taken for pain relief and cost effectiveness of homeopathy. And homoeopathy has shown some promising results in clinical practice. ⮚ Homoeopathy plays major role in management of osteoarthritis cases of knee by reducing swelling, tenderness, pain relief and by improving loss of function so we can give better quality of life to patient and we can also decrease prevalence of knee replacement surgery by proper homoeopathic medicine that is by proper case taking, symptoms analysis, evaluation, repertorization and selection of medicine, potency and dose. But it is very difficult to choose similimum from Materia medica so here repertory become tool which is helpful in finding similimum by searching symptoms as a rubric in which group of medicine are listed.
