Title

ICONOGRAPHY OF ODISHI RAGAS : AN OVERVIEW

Abstract

The image-forms of ragas corresponding to its tonal bodies or sound-forms are in vogue from ancient time. In Brhaddesi, Matanga Muni has indicated the presiding deities for each svara, but he has not cited it for the melodies. Kohala, an earlier authority than Matanga, is said to be the first scholar, who has indicated the images, pictures or deities of particular ragas. Like the image-worship in the Hindu-Brahminical tradition, the images of the ragas emanate from Lord Brahma as the spirits, ethos, deities, gods or nymphs and descend on the earth in the physical sound-form when invoked and induced by the earnest prayer of singers and performers. Each raga has definite image, which is to be approached with a definite vija-mantra laid down in the mystic words. When the vija-mantra of each raga is sung, pronounced or recited or eulogized through its sound-form, a mysterious power is emanated from the performer, which induces the presiding deity of the raga to descend. Therefore, this method of invocation is known as dhyana of a raga. The nadamaya rupa (sound-form) of a raga is the spirit, through which the murtti (visual form) of the raga manifests.
