Title

Effect Of Quality Education On Pupils’ Retention Rate In Public Primary Schools In Rwanda A Case Of Nyabihu District

Abstract

Abstract This work aimed to assess effect of quality education on pupils' retention rate in public primary schools in Nyabihu District. The specific objectives were: to examine the extent to which quality education delivered in public primary schools in Nyabihu district in Rwanda, to identify the level of pupils’retention rate in public primary schools in Nyabihu district in Rwanda and to determine effect of quality education on pupils ‘Retention rate in public primary schools in Nyabihu district in Rwanda. The findings were a baseline to the other researchers, academicians as far as society is concerned and it also helped the ministry of education at different levels where it provided the information on how to minimize the dropout in the pupils and improve the quality education as of the strategies. Not only this but also it availed different factors leading to pupils’ retention and the connection with education quality in primary public schools that help policy makers to find sustainable solution. This study was based on descriptive and correlation research design and it used a stratified sampling technique to get 78 respondents from 96-population size while semi structured survey and consultation guide helped in data collection. Microsoft excel was used in data entry and representing data on graphs, thereafter data were subjected to descriptive statistics, correlation analysis via the statistical package for the Social Sciences (IBM/SPSS) version 21 and Microsoft excel served as data entry and was used in analyzing quantitative data. Qualitative data was analyzed by using thematic method, Karl Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to establish relationship between variables. Regression analysis was used to show that quality education influences pupils’ Retention rate at 50.1 percent of R- square. The findings from this study have shown that completion rate, teachers’ qualifications and student’s teacher ratio as well as educational outcomes are indicators of quality education. It also indicated that every increase on teaching qualification and pupils’retention rate increases at 64 percent. It was concluded that effective quality education delivery improves pupils’ retention rate in public primary schools somewhere from 49,2 percent to 78,2 percent. In order to improve the quality of education and raise the retention rate, the study suggested that educational authorities and intervenors provide facilities for learning in all public elementary schools. In order to produce a comparison study, the researcher recommended to conduct the additional research on the impact of quality instruction on students' discipline in Rwandan public primary schools.
